Does Komodo Island Named After The Komodo Dragons?

The complete question came up in my mind is: Does Komodo Island named after the komodo dragons whose living on it or the opposite?

For some of you whom do not know much about Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province - Indonesia, according to the above question - which might be sounds weird or made up - there are 2 terms to the related questions which are:
  • Komodo Island;
  • Komodo Dragon(s).
Komodo Island and dragon name

The answer is: The Komodo dragons are named after the Komodo Island. Prooved by the original paper written in 1912 by Java Zoological Museum director Peter A. Ouwens that describing the lizards as: “On a large Varanus species from the island of Komodo.” And this is also had became the title of the paper itself.

He (Ouwens) himself was never called the lizards as "Komodo" or "Dragons" or the combining of the both words in his paper, instead he was referring to them using the name given by local residents at that time:

The latter [J. K. H. van Steyn van Henbroek] mentioned, that he had received information from the inhabitants of that island [Flores], that in the neighbourhood of Laboean Badjo, and on the island of Komodo occured a Varanus species of an unusual size. They called the animal “Boeaja darat” (land crocodile). His curiosity having been aroused by these reports, he resolved to collect some particulars concerning these animals and to obtain a specimen if possible, as soon as he should be on duty in the island of Komodo.

Then when Ouwens proposed a scientific name for this biggest lizard species, he named it after the island: Varanus Komodoensis.

The name “Komodo dragon” only came into popular use after the lizards were exhibited at the Scientific Meeting of the Zoological Society of London in 1928. Of her observations at the meeting, zoologist Joan Procter titled the publication “On a living Komodo Dragon Varanus Komodoensis Ouwens”.

But, whatever the history told us, I believe that the name itself was given by the original tribe in there: The Komodo Tribe. Who's with me?

But there is funny thing when talking about Komodo - they live on several Indonesian islands - including the more larger island: Flores. And there are more komodos on Flores than on Komodo Island itself, so i think they are really need to be called as: Flores Dragons.

Nope?!
